Most good birthday messages have three parts. Start with the birthday wish itself. Then add one personal line: a memory, a thing you admire about them, or something you're looking forward to doing together this year. Finish with a hope for their year ahead.
For example: "Happy birthday, Dana! I still laugh about the day we got lost looking for that waterfall. Here's to more adventures this year." That's three sentences, and nobody else could have written it.
The personal line is the one people reread. If you don't know the person well, skip the memory and name a quality you like in them, such as their patience, their humor or how they treat people.
Two to four sentences is right for most birthday cards. For a partner, a parent or a best friend, a short paragraph is lovely, and many people keep those cards for years. For a coworker, a neighbor or a group card, one or two lines is plenty.
Let the card guide you. If the printed verse inside already says a lot, a short personal line underneath is enough. If the card is blank, you have room for a fuller message. Write neatly and leave a little space. A clear short note looks better than a long one crammed into the corners.
Match the sign-off to the relationship. "Love" or "All my love" suits family, partners and close friends. "Warmly," "Best wishes" or "Cheers" works for coworkers and people you know less well. Add your last name if the person might know more than one of you.
A family can sign together, with each child writing their own name if they're old enough. It's a small thing that grandparents notice. In the UK and much of the Commonwealth, "Mum" is the usual spelling, and "many happy returns" is a classic birthday greeting that still feels warm.
Go easy on age. Some people love a joke about turning 50, and others would rather not see the number at all. If you're not sure, celebrate the person instead of the age. Skip comments about weight, looks, money worries or when they'll get married or have kids. If you're giving cash or a gift card, mention it lightly and never write the amount.
Missed the day? Send the card anyway. A short line such as "Late, but you were on my mind all week" is enough. Don't spend the whole card apologizing. Then write your birthday message as you normally would.
If you're raising a glass at a 40th, 60th or 80th, Toastful's birthday speech guide shows you what to say. The writer turns your stories about the guest of honor into a personal draft in about a minute.
Open the guideWish them a happy birthday, add one personal line, and finish with a hope for their year. The personal line can be a shared memory, something you admire about them or a plan you're excited about. For example: "Happy birthday, Sam! Thanks for always making me laugh on bad days. I hope this year is full of good ones." Sign with a warm closing and your name.
A good short birthday wish is warm and specific, even in one line. Try "Happy birthday to someone who makes ordinary days better just by showing up" or "Another year of you is good news for all of us." If you have room for a second line, add the person's name and one thing you like about them. Short is fine. Generic is what people forget.
Add one detail that only fits this person. Mention a trip you took together, a habit you love, a way they helped you this year or an inside joke. "Happy birthday, hope it's a great one" could go to anyone. "Happy birthday to the only person who still mails me postcards" could only go to them. One true detail beats a long, polished message.
Only if you know they'll enjoy it. Kids, young adults and many people hitting a milestone like 40, 50 or 80 love seeing the number. Others would rather not be reminded. When in doubt, leave the number out and celebrate the person instead: their year, their wins and what they mean to you. Gentle age jokes belong in cards for people you know well.
Name the milestone, then look back and look ahead. Say something about who they've been over the decades, such as the family they built, the friend they've been or the work they're proud of, and finish with a wish for the next chapter. Milestone cards are often kept, so it's worth writing a few extra sentences or adding a favorite memory.
Keep the apology to one line and move on to the good part. For example: "Happy belated birthday! I'm late, but I've been thinking about you all week." Then write the same warm message you would have sent on time. A late card still tells someone you remembered, and most people are just glad to hear from you.
